Since we will be talking about the best of indie games here, don’t be surprised to find some pretty well-known names intertwined amongst the titles. In the end, it all comes down to what you classify as indie, and for us, these games fall right into that bracket. Not to mention that the indie world of games has grown substantially over the years, so who’s to say what’s indie anymore?
That aside, all these games could be found on the Nintendo Switch, so make sure to get a Nintendo eShop Card if you’re planning on getting any games. Oh, and if you’re new to the Nintendo Switch, you could always look at this handy beginner’s guide we have on hand.

Hades
Right off the bat, we have Hades, a name that has made itself known throughout 2020 with its roguelike dungeon goodness. A game inspired by Greek mythology, it is fronted by Zagreus (Hades’ son) as he attempts to escape the Underworld to run away from his father (Hades). It’s like a rebellious teen running away from home type of situation, except there’s more death involved in this one.
Anyways, Zagreus would confront his family and learn a lot about himself with every attempt to escape. With the help of special weapons, trinkets, and blessings from his extended family, Zagreus would soon see himself free of the Underworld at last – after a lot of tries (deaths) of course. This award-winning/nominated game will fill your world with upbeat music and memorable characters that will stay with you long after the game is over.
Undertale
If their fanbase doesn’t make you shudder, experiencing Undertale just might do the trick. Even if we’re already in 2021, the 2015 fanbase could still be heard screeching in the distance. Rightfully so, as the game is a masterpiece that catapulted Toby Fox into the indie hall of fame where he knows no rest.
Undertale is an RPG game written, scored, and designed by Toby Fox with engaging combat, beautiful music, fourth-wall-breaking comedy, and weird commentary. This game is truly something that should be experienced by everyone, even if for the hell of it.

Cuphead
Play this game and finally know what frustration feels like. Either that or extreme satisfaction at finally beating the continuous bosses after a hundred tries. Incorporated with 1930s retro animation style and a well-done soundtrack; Cuphead is basically an endless boss battle.
Cuphead gambled and lost to the Devil, so now he is tasked with being a debt collector for the Devil himself. Joined by Mugman (his brother) through co-op, the duo has to battle through four worlds to finally battle with the Devil himself. All this to free themselves from debt, so remember to never make a deal with the Devil!
The only downside is they don’t have a physical copy but they have an awesome themed controller that is a must-have for every collectors out there!
Untitled Goose Game
Ever wanted a pet goose? Or better yet, to annoy the life out of people and still be able to get away with it? Well then, Untitled Goose Game is the one for you! You take charge as an unhinged, chaotic goose, running around causing mayhem and stealing things from people. Disrupting lives has never been easier.
This game was a viral meme sensation back in 2019 when it was first released, calling to mind the previously famous Goat Simulator in 2014. These two games are nothing alike, of course. Untitled Goose Game actually makes an effort (albeit a disruptively funny one) at creating challenges and obstacles for players to accomplish. It’s a good game for a casual laugh after a long tiring day.
Hollow Knight
Since we’re still waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong to be released, we could always jump back into the original Hollow Knight to fuel our frustration. Hollow Knight is one of the best Metroidvania games out there which spans over a massive world interconnected by tunnels. It’s a bug-filled world, and who knew bugs could look so cute? (well when they’re not attacking you that is).
Aside from its addictive (and frustrating) gameplay, the visuals of the game are beautifully paired with a haunting soundtrack. Plus, being clueless and trying to figure out your destiny is definitely a problem that we can all relate to.
Bastion
Fill in the shoes of a young boy known as ‘the Kid” that sets out to search for the truth behind an apocalyptic disaster known as ‘the Calamity’. This is an action RPG with a unique take on storytelling as a narrator proceeds to narrate your every action. Kinda like a superhero movie with a narrator that narrates their background and life.
As the Kid ventures out into the world, various enemies and monsters will attempt to attack him, so players will always have to be on their toes. The many levels will bring a variety of environments and monsters, so there will be an endless stream of fun to be had.
Sakuna of Rice and Ruin
If you’re into farming, adventure, and fighting demons – you’re in luck! This game is made for you. It’s basically a more adventurous Stardew Valley with a strong focus on rice farming. It is a JRPG released at the end of last year, in November.
The story follows Princess Sakuna, the Goddess of Harvest as she is thrown onto the Isle of Demons to protect a small group of humans whilst clearing the island of demons. Rice plays a big part in the game as it affects Sakuna’s health and powers, so you’ll learn how to get the best quality of rice by figuring out the best fertilizers, weather conditions, and so on.
